On Wednesday, Australian legend Ricky Ponting was named head coach of Punjab Kings, taking Trevor Bayliss’ position at the underachieving IPL team. The former captain of Australia has moved from Delhi Capitals, where he spent seven years, to Punjab Kings. “Ponting signed the contract yesterday and it is for four years. He will need that much time to build the squad. Ponting will take a call on the rest of the support staff,” a source close to the IPL told PTI.
The Delhi Capitals rose to prominence under Ponting, and although though they made it to the final in 2020, they were never able to win the coveted championship. He was the Mumbai Indians’ coach as well.
Since the IPL’s founding in 2008, Punjab has also never triumphed, therefore the four co-owners will be hoping that the skipper who won the World Cup leads them all the way.
Punjab is one squad that is frequently criticized for their continuous cutting and changing. Their only final participation occurred back in 2014. They placed ninth out of ten teams earlier this year and have not even been in the top five in the previous seven seasons.
For the previous two seasons, Baylish led the team captained by the now-retired Shikhar Dhawan. Sunil Joshi looked after the spinners, Charles Langveldt was the coach for quick bowling, and Sanjay Bangar oversaw cricket development.
Anil Kumble coached Punjab Kings before Bayliss, although they never achieved victory.
Arshdeep Singh, Jitesh Sharma, Kagiso Rabada, Liam Livingstone, Sam Curran, and Jonny Bairstow are among Punjab’s excellent core players, but the team hasn’t produced any outcomes. This season’s Punjab Kings was unremarkable overall, but two players stood out: Ashutosh Sharma and uncapped Shashank Singh.
